Trying on 5 Den Ultra Sheer Pantyhose

May 31, 2013 under Seasonal

How sheer can I go?  5 Den is probably the maximum I’ve reached!

A while back I tried 5 den pantyhose by Levante from StockingsHQ.  They were run-resistant and very durable.  I wore them for a long time without any damage forming. But the fabric wasn’t exceptionally stretchy, perhaps average elasticity.

Now, I just discovered a whole new different 5 den hose!  A fan sent me a present that included a pair of Pretty Polly 5 den pantyhose.  Yesterday I couldn’t wait and tried it before going to sleep.  Oh, those were surprisingly stretchy, probably the stretchiest pair I encountered.

Just wanted to put up a short note here about it.  5 den is the most sheer I’ve ever tried.

Lurex Hosiery – What is Lurex Material?

May 24, 2013 under Facts

LUREX MATERIAL

Lurex tights by Fiore – available at the shop section

Hosiery decorated with metallic yarn, or Lurex, is a common sight these days, especially around the holiday time when people want to put on every sparkling garment they possibly can.  But have you ever wondered, how did it come to be that metal became part of our garments?  I looked up some information that may help to understand what it really is.

Lurex material was invented in the 1940s and it is simply a combination of several types of synthetic yarns woven together with aluminium.  It is a thread like a thin strip of a shiny film of metal-like appearance.  In some dictionaries it says that the word Lurex can refer to the shiny material that consists of such threads.  Such yarn is added to the weave to create an effect of metallic shine.  But it is never used on its own because of its roughness and lack of durability.

Lurex is a trade mark of such metallic yarn.  It is produced in many countries and it is obtained from aluminium foil coated with a film or an emulsion to avoid oxidation.  In order to obtain different colours, a pigment is added.

DISCO DECADES OF LUREX

Such clothing, containing Lurex, was unusually popular during the disco decades of 1970s and 1980s.  The first one to demonstrate tops with addition of Lurex yarn was a designer Bill Gibb in 1970s.  In 1980s this yarn was a top fashion hit and such synthetic shine is the characteristic became associated with that time.

Lurex pantyhose may have it all over, or just a side pattern somewhere that sparkles and creates a certain party spirit.  If you decided to buy such pantyhose, it’s best to give some thought as to where you’ll wear it.  Perhaps it’s best to save for a disco outing.

Perhaps it’s important to say that Lurex is not meant for not for indecisive and shy women or fans of minimalism in fashion.  This is a material that draws attention to the wearer and highlights the figure.

Also, it is interesting to note that Lurex is not a word that is strictly associated with female wardrobe.  Some Italian stylists offer a shiny sweater and classic cut pants as an evening outfit for men.  We’ll keep you posted if Italian machos will follow stylists’ recommendations.

The fashion of shiny garments seems to come back every now and then, so such clothing may very well be tomorrow’s new trend again.  It’s something that today we regularly see in evening dresses, scarves, hats, stockings, and so on.  Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Diane Von Furstenberg, Max Mara, Salvatore Ferragamo, Oscar de La Renta are just some of the designers who periodically demonstrate Lurex-decorated collections.

SUPER SHINY LUREX TIGHTS

Modeled by Thomas, a big hosiery fan from Austria.  His ultra-shiny pantyhose is beautiful, but he admits that he needs to wear another sheer pair underneath because otherwise it’s just too itchy.

Pantyhose Scam, 1984, Connecticut

May 18, 2013 under What to Avoid

I was surprised to come across a scam story online that happened in 1984 in United States.  Pittsburgh newspaper published an article that seemed more like actions of a street scam agency rather than an actual hosiery corporation.  I wonder how someone would get so desperate to sell their product in order to use such tactics.  Would love to hear your opinion!

Newspaper Article on Pantyhose Scam

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - May 4, 1984

pantyhose scam story

Hartford, Conn. (AP) – State officials said yesterday they are going to court to stop a “pantyhose scam” they claim has been perpetrated on Connecticut residents.

Attorney General Joseph I. Liberman and Consumer Protection Commissioner Mary M. Heslin said Hosiery Corporation of America, based in Philadelphia, mailed packets containing four pairs of pantyhose to an undetermined number of Connecticut households.

Recipients were told one pair was a gift and they would have to pay for the other three by a deadline or their credit status would be damaged.

“This pantyhose scam is a flagrant violation of both state and federal laws, which make it clear that an unsolicited merchandise sent through the mail is an unconditional gift and can be kept by the recipient,” said Lieberman.

Liberman said the state filed suit against the company seeking a court order to prevent it from continuing the scheme.  The suit also seeks restitution for everyone who paid for the hosiery.

In addition, the attorney general said, the suit targets Retrieval Masters Credit Bureau Inc. of New York, which sought to collect on the “overdue” accounts.

“While the collection agency is not being faulted for attempting to collect what it perceived were overdue accounts, we are suing them because they do not have a licence to act as a collection agency in this state,” Helsin said.

Liberman and Mrs. Heslin urged those who received the mailings to contact her office in Hartford.

Queen of Sky – Blogging Dangerously

May 6, 2013 under What to Avoid

queen_of_skyThis wonderful lady, Ellen Simonetti, had a job as a flight attendant at Delta Airlines a while back and ran a blog called Queen of Sky about her personal life.

But after taking such photos (even though not provocative) and posting them on her blog, the airline terminated her employment without a warning.

Could it really be that this Queen of Sky in her flight attendant uniform with sheer glossy pantyhose and a flirty pose would cause someone to fire her for posing in an empty airplane?  Could it somehow still be too sexy?

Perhaps nobody would know who she is if this wouldn’t happen to her and she wouldn’t file a lawsuit against the airline.  But I guess that her termination lead to her popularity in a way.  I even read about her in a book on blogging!  It’s a whole different matter whether she used that popularity to her benefit or not – at least her original blog doesn’t exist anymore, for example.

Either way, be careful what you do at work and where you post it.  Some companies really do feel protective of their uniforms being photographed, etc.  A great publicity success for the Queen of Sky, after winning that lawsuit, and a lesson for the rest who are not up for lawsuits.

What My Grandpa Thinks about Bare Legs in Winter

January 19, 2013 under Practical

sheer pantyhose on the street with high heelsFreezing my feet off in cold weather is a dangerous thing for me.  I know, if I prance around in some fancy summer heels and light pantyhose in winter, next day I’ll be down with some serious health problems in the private sector that may linger for a long time afterwards.

How do I know this if I never tried it?  Well, that’s what I’ve been told over and over when I was growing up by my Grandma.  As a child, I would come back from a walk outdoors in winter, she would take off my shoes and feel my feet.  If my feet were cold, she would panic.  She passed away last year and I miss her dearly, we were very close.

I called up my grandfather and decided to ask him about this.

Me: Grandpa, women here go with bare legs in cold weather.

Grandpa: When I was little, we had neighbours who went practically barefoot.  They had a large family and no money to buy clothing.

Me: Well, the women here simply don’t want to bother to wear pantyhose.  I see them in dresses and bare legs on the subway.

Grandpa: I also recently saw a homeless guy in the subway with pants that had holes in them.  Really, these days people throw clothes in the dumpster.  Can’t he find pants without holes there?

Me: Look, the women here just don’t want to wear anything on their legs.  They don’t think that it can affect their health.

Grandpa: Oh, common, they have plenty of clothes in North America!  Why would they go bare-legged if there is plenty of clothing?

 ***

No matter how I tried to explain that these women are making a conscious choice to go with bare legs, my grandpa couldn’t grasp this bizarre idea.  To him poverty was the only explanation to bare legs in cold weather.

 ***

Me: Grandpa, I remember Grandma used to tell me to keep my legs warm, especially everything below the knee.  She told me that if the feet get chilled, it will lead to gynaecological problems.

Grandpa: Not only!  It’s bad for both men and women.  Grandma knew everything about that.

Me: How do you know this?  Did you read this somewhere or is this some kind of wisdom passed down from the ancestors?

Grandpa: It’s common knowledge that areas on your feet correspond to your other bodyparts like liver, kidneys, and so on.  Don’t you have Vietnamese people there in Vancouver?  Ask them, their Eastern Medicine is progressive.

There is a notion in some parts of Europe and some parts of Asia about the concept of feet being connected to other forms in a person’s body.  I guess that what you consider this to be depends on where you reside.

If you are North American, you may think of this as nonsense.  If you are in a place like Hungary, let’s say, you may think of this as common truth that everyone knows.

Thus, if you are from the States or Canada, just forget everything you read above.

Go ahead, start your day, but please wear your pantyhose anyway!

Pantyhose Models from WamInStyle and Holiday Greetings

December 25, 2012 under Seasonal

My friends, if you like to see pantyhose photos, I recommend to visit WamInStyle website.  I even had a pleasure of meeting them this summer when I was visiting Russian and we even collaborated on a photoshoot.

Their main theme is wetlook – it’s a fun of doing something that your mother told you to never do, i.e. get your fancy clothes wet.  Their models can walk into a fountain or jump into a river during their photoshoots.  Having said that, they absolutely love pantyhose and stockings, so majority of their shoots don’t go without some kind of hosiery involved.

So if you are a hosiery fan, it’s a great place to look at some photos.  You may even consider a subscription since there is a really good special on currently.

There is currently a special on subscription to WamInStyle.

http://www.waminstyle.com/

Also, to my knowledge, they accept requests from their members and even non-members who are interested in a specific photoshoot.

Is there such thing as too bright or too patterned when it comes to pantyhose?

December 12, 2012 under What to Avoid

Is there such thing as too bright or too much when it comes to hosiery?  Below are some designs by Zohara tights, Israeli brand (even though most likely not made there).

I personally find this a bit of an overkill.  The fact that the model looks pissed off also puts me off.  What do you think?

Hanukkah Pantyhose Party

December 10, 2012 under Seasonal

I went to see my accountant on the first day of Hanukkah and to my surprise she was also wearing fancy pantyhose.  Don’t we look cute together?

Her family is Jewish, but they follow local traditions too – that explains the decorations under the tree.  The tree to them is just a cute thing, not related to any religion.

I pulled up my knee high skirt and posed with her for some photos.  She was surprised to see me so excited about what she was wearing.  Well, I guess it’s because I never see her in pantyhose!

I think that sparkly of patterned hosiery is a great way to add some spirit to a holiday outfit.

Wrong Shade of Pantyhose?

November 30, 2012 under What to Avoid

Is there such thing as a wrong shade of pantyhose?  I found this photo on a forum.  This woman is wearing pantyhose that looks slightly greener than her own skin tone.  Isn’t it kind of strange?  I would imagine it would look much better on a black girl, for example.

Do you agree?  I’d be interested to hear your thoughts.

OR COULD THIS BE A COLOR CAST FROM THE GRASS AND TREES?

Update on Dec 4th, 2012 – submitted by Mike

In his comment below he says: ”

I agree with David. Beware of color cast!

Pictures taken in a forest, under trees or with a large area of grass tend to be green, because of the reflection of the sun on the green leaves or the grass like above. In the same idea, pics taken in the snow tend to look bluer because of the reflection of the sky on the snow’s surface. I made a corrected version of this photo, if you’re interested. It’s fairer to judge a picture with the good equilibrium of the color tones.”

He says: “I corrected the yellow cast caused by the sun in the background and the green cast caused by the grass on the foreground. I also lowered the saturation of the colour of the girl’s face, as her face looked pinkish.”

If Mike is right about the colour cast, I’d say that she is actually wearing a good shade of pantyhose judging by the corrected photos.  In terms of her skin tone – I think that the poor girl simply got a bit of a sunburn in the summer.
